Intro to Irish Dance

Beginning Irish Dance

Basic Overview: This is a class that introduces students to Irish Dance movements and technique. Students explore both softshoe and hardshoe basic movements as well as learn a group choreography for the end of semester showcase. (December for Fall semester students and May for Spring semester students). 

Prerequisite: None

Opportunities: Winter showcase (for fall semester students), St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase (Spring semester students), summer parades. 

Advancement: After students have shown an understanding of basic soft and hardshoe movements they will be invited to advance in class programming for the next semester. All advancement is at teacher discretion. 

Price commitment

  • One time costume fee $95. (Costumes are available for rent for first year students).


Rince 1

Basic Overview: During this class students will learn the basic solo softshoe and hardshoe dances. This class specially focuses on making and achieving goals in personal dance development. 

Prerequisite: Intro to Irish Dance/Beginning Irish Dance

Opportunities: Winter showcase (for fall semester students), St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase (Spring semester students), summer parades. 

Advancement: Students will participate in Feis or Class Feis during which students will be assessed for advancement at teacher discretion. 

Price commitment

  • One time costume fee $95


Rince 2

Basic Overview: During this class students will learn and polish more difficult solo softshoe and hardshoe dances. Correct Irish dance technique and form are a main focus.

Prerequisite: Rince 1

Opportunities: Winter showcase (for fall semester students), St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase (Spring semester students), summer parades. 

Advancement: Students will participate in Feis or Class Feis during which students will be assessed for advancement at teacher discretion. 

Price commitment

Rince 3

Basic Overview: Students continue to develop more advanced solo softshoe and hardshoe dances. Students are pushed at high levels to perform solo dances with correct Irish dance technique and form. 

Prerequisite: Rince 2

Opportunities: Winter showcase (for fall semester students), St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase (Spring semester students), summer parades. 

Advancement: Students will participate in Feis or Class Feis during which students will be assessed for advancement at teacher discretion.

Technique

Basic Overview: During this class students will focus on strictly Irish dance basic moves and techniques that will be applied to their solo or ceili dancing. Form and footwork are essential elements to correct dancing. 

Prerequisites: Intro to Irish Dance/ Beginning Irish Dance. Students must be enrolled in another class.


Competition Team Bundles

In order to participate in competition students must be enrolled in a competition bundle. The bundle will depend on the level they have reached according to Feis progression levels. 

Beginner 1 and 2: 

Class requirements

  • One Technique class

  • One Rince 1 or 2 class a week. (Students may take more than one if desired)

Expectations

  • Full Year Commitment: Dancers commit to the competition team for the entire year.

  • Attendance Policy:  Attendance in class is essential to the success of a student at competition. It is in class where students learn dances, receive feedback, and make dances ready for feis. We implement an attendance policy to ensure all dancers on the Competitive Team are as dedicated to success as the teachers who provide classes.

    • Competitive team members are not allowed more than 2 absences in any solo class in the three months before competition. 

    • If dancers miss any class, they must let their teacher know in advance.

    • Consequences for not following attendance policies include not being allowed to participate in upcoming feis and/or being dropped from the competitive program. 

Competition 

  • Students must participate in the class feis in the month before any competition they attend.

  • Students must attend 2 feis a year to continue being eligible for the competition team.

Championship/ (Pre-Championship Oireachtas Students)

    • Competitive team members are not allowed more than 5 absences in any solo class in the three months before competition. 

    • If dancers miss any class, they must let their teacher know in advance.

    • Consequences for not following attendance policies include not being allowed to participate in upcoming feis and/or being dropped from the competitive program

Competition 

  • Students must participate in the class feis in the month before any competition they attend.

  • Students must attend 4 feis a year to continue being eligible for the competition team. 

  • Students are highly encourage to participate regional and national competitions when qualified.

WBID Performing Company

Basic Overview: Students are challenged with difficult and diverse Irish dance choreographies. Students learn skills to make an interesting and exciting audience experience while performing.  

Prerequisite: 1 year of Irish Dance experience after advancing from Intro to Irish dance/Beginning Irish Dance. Audition. (Audition will be for numbers within the Company, not to be accepted into the company. All students who audition will be accepted into the class.) 

Opportunities: Winter showcase, St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase, summer parades. 

Requirements

  • Dress Policy: In order for students to focus on unity in team dancing, a dress policy is in place for this class. Students need to wear black/dark bottoms (no jeans OR baggy pants), and any sort of Wasatch Back Irish Dance Top OR a plain black shirt. Students will have one reminder when dress codes are not followed. If dress code is not regularly followed students will be dropped from the company and invited to our non-audition performing class.

  • Attendance Policy:  Attendance in class is essential to the success of not only the student but of the team as well. We implement an attendance policy to ensure all dancers are equally dedicated to the team.

    • Company members are not allowed more than 3 absences in the semester.

    • If dancers miss any class, they must let their teacher know in advance.

    • Consequences for not following attendance policies include not being allowed to participate in particular dances or being dropped from the Company.

  • Full Year Commitment: Students commit to classes/performances for the full performance year.

  • Performance Commitment: Students participate in all shows or students give advanced notice of missing shows so teachers can replace their team position. 

If students do abide by requirements they will be moved to the non-audition performing class for the rest of the semester. 

Price commitments

  • Costume fees $50 per a year.


Performing Non-Audition

Basic Overview: In this class students learn group choreographies and basic performance skills. Students will learn both soft and hardshoe choreographies for showcases. 

Prerequisite: Intro to Irish Dance/Beginning Irish Dance

Opportunities: Winter showcase (for fall semester students), St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase (Spring semester students), summer parades. 

Advancement: Once students have participated in this class for 1 semester they will be eligible to audition for the WBID performing company. 

Price commitments:

  • Costume fees: $40 yearly costume rental


Ceili Class

Basic Overview: Students learn traditional group ceili dances. Students focus on unity and community through Irish dance.

Prerequisite: Intro to Irish dance/Beginning Irish Dance. 

Opportunities: Winter showcase, St. Patrick’s Day shows, Summer Showcase, summer parades. 

Price commitments

  • No price commitments. 


Competitive Ceili

(Coming 2024 - To be eligible students will need to enroll in ceili class for Fall 2023)

Basic Overview: Students learn four and eight hand ceili dances for competition. Students focus on precision, unity, and strength of dancing. 

Prerequisite: 1 semester of participation in ceili class.

Requirements

  • Attendance Policy:  Attendance in class is essential to the success of not only the student but of the team as well. We implement an attendance policy to ensure all dancers are equally dedicated to the team.

  • Ceili Team members are not allowed more than 2 absences in the semester.

    • If dancers miss any class, they must let their teacher know in advance.

    • Consequences for not following attendance policies include being dropped from the program.

  • Technique Requirement: Students must be enrolled in a technique class. 

  • Year Commitment: Students commit to the full competition year. 

  • Competition Commitment: Students compete ceili in all competitions (October, February, June) Or give advanced notice of missing so teachers can replace their spot on the team.

  • Dress Policy: In order for students to focus on unity in team dancing, a dress policy is in place for this class. Adult Irish Dance

Basic Overview: Adult dancers focus on Irish dance technique and fitness through group ceili dances (attendance permitting) and solo dances.

We understand that dancing as an adult is different from dancing as a kid. We will work with you on your journey in Irish dance. Opportunities for performance as well as solo and group ceili competitions are available if you would like. Classes are open to people who want to come and dance just for the fun and fitness and for those who would like to pursue competitive or other goals.
